Limiter

Complete manual and reference for the Limiter module.

UPDATED MAR 9, 2026

How Does It Work?#

Limiter is a stereo brickwall limiter with adjustable threshold and ceiling, optional external sidechain detection, lookahead, and a switchable soft-clip stage.

Quick Overview#

  • Stereo program inputs: In L and In R.
  • Optional stereo sidechain inputs: SC L and SC R.
  • Separate Threshold and Ceiling controls.
  • Lookahead helps catch fast transients before they overshoot.
  • The panel includes a live scope with a visible ceiling reference line.

Inputs And Outputs#

PortTypeWhat It Does
In LAudio inputLeft program input.
In RAudio inputRight program input.
SC LAudio inputLeft external sidechain input.
SC RAudio inputRight external sidechain input.
Thr CVCV inputBipolar threshold modulation. ±5V maps to about ±24 dB.
Ceil CVCV inputBipolar ceiling modulation. ±5V maps to about ±12 dB.
Rel CVCV inputBipolar release modulation around the panel release setting.
Mix CVCV inputBipolar dry/wet modulation around the panel setting.
Out LAudio outputLeft limited output.
Out RAudio outputRight limited output.

Controls Reference#

ControlRange / ValuesDefaultBehavior
Threshold-48..0 dB-8 dBStart point for limiting action.
Ceiling-24..0 dB-1 dBFinal output ceiling target.
Attack0.05..20 ms1 msAttack time for gain reduction.
Release10..2000 ms120 msRelease time for gain reduction.
Knee0..12 dB2 dBSoft-knee width around the threshold.
Lookahead0..10 ms2 msDelay applied so the limiter can react before peaks reach the output.
SC HPF20..500 Hz120 HzHigh-pass filter on the detector path.
Mix0..11Dry/wet blend.
SC Drive0..12 dB3 dBDrive amount for the soft-clip stage.
LinkOff, OnOnLinks stereo channels for shared limiting behavior.
Auto RelOff, OnOnAdapts release timing to limiting depth.
Soft ClipOff, OnOnEnables the pre-limiter soft-clip stage.

Behavior Notes#

  • If no sidechain cable is connected, the limiter detects from the main program input.
  • If only one sidechain side is patched, that signal is reused to keep the detector path complete.
  • Ceiling is the limiter's output target, and the panel scope draws it as a reference line.
  • Soft Clip inserts a saturating stage before the brickwall action. SC Drive only matters when soft clipping is enabled.
  • Mix supports parallel limiting directly inside the module.
