Clock Gen
Complete manual and reference for the Clock Gen module.

How Does It Work?#
Clock Gen is a master transport clock that outputs a high-resolution PPQN pulse stream plus a beat-level BEAT gate, giving the rest of the patch a stable tempo reference from one central BPM control.
Quick Overview#
- It is a self-contained master clock source.
BPMsets the tempo from20to300.PPQNswitches between16and24pulses per quarter note.RUNstarts and stops the transport.RSTre-aligns the clock and beat phase.
Inputs And Outputs#
| Port | Type | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
RST | Trigger | Resets the clock phase on a rising edge. |
PPQN | Clock | Main pulse output. Pulses are short trigger-style highs at the selected PPQN rate. |
BEAT | Gate | A beat-level gate with a 50% duty cycle, one cycle per beat. |
Controls Reference#
| Control | Values | Default | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
BPM | 20..300 | 120 | Sets the master tempo. |
RUN | Off, On | Off | Starts or stops clock generation. |
PPQN | 16, 24 | 24 | Sets the pulse density of the PPQN output. |
Timing Behavior#
PPQNoutputs short clock pulses at either16or24pulses per quarter note.BEATis easier to patch when you want a musical gate instead of a dense pulse train.- When the module starts running, it re-aligns to the beginning of a beat.
- A rising edge at
RSTdoes the same reset while the clock is already running.
In practice, PPQN is the signal you feed into dividers, multipliers, or tightly synced sequencers, while BEAT is the signal you use when you want one broader gate per beat.
Reset And Transport Notes#
RSTis edge-triggered, so it responds when the input crosses high rather than staying continuously high.- Stopping the module silences both outputs.
- Starting or resetting the module re-centers the timing grid so downstream clock modules can re-lock cleanly.
Panel Visualization#
The LED ring is a performance aid rather than an extra output:
- one LED position sweeps around the ring as the beat progresses
- all LEDs flash briefly at each beat boundary
That makes it easy to see both the current tempo and the beat reset point at a glance.
