Analog Fold Osc

Complete manual and reference for the Analog Fold Osc module.

UPDATED MAR 9, 2026

How Does It Work?#

Analog Fold Osc is a compact Buchla-inspired oscillator that starts from a pitched core waveform, then increases harmonic density by folding the wave back on itself.

Quick Overview#

  • It is a single-output oscillator with built-in wavefolding.
  • Freq sets the base pitch in Hz.
  • Fold sets how strongly the waveform is folded.
  • V/Oct handles pitch tracking, FM adds frequency modulation, and Fold CV modulates the fold amount.

Inputs And Outputs#

PortTypeWhat It Does
V/OctCVApplies 1V/oct pitch control to the oscillator frequency.
FMCVApplies bipolar frequency modulation on top of the current tuning.
FoldCVModulates the fold amount before the final 0..1 clamp.
OutAudioOutputs the folded oscillator signal.

Controls Reference#

ControlRangeDefaultBehavior
Freq20..20000 Hz261.63 HzSets the base oscillator frequency before CV.
Fold0..10.5Sets the amount of wavefolding. Higher values create denser harmonics.

Behavior Notes#

  • Pitch is built from Freq, then modified by V/Oct and FM.
  • Frequency is clamped to the audible range before audio is generated.
  • Fold modulation is added to the knob value, then clamped back to 0..1.
  • Parameter changes are smoothed, so tuning and fold moves stay stable instead of stepping.

Patching Ideas#

  • Keep Fold low for a cleaner tone, then open it with an envelope or LFO.
  • Use FM for extra motion while V/Oct keeps the oscillator playable from a sequencer or keyboard.
  • Patch a slow CV into Fold to move from simple tones into richer West Coast-style timbres.
